What Do You Hide?

“We are SO accustomed to disguise ourselves to others that, in the end, we become disguised to ourselves.”

Francois de La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680)

I’m curious…..why are we so intent on disguises?  We disguise our hair color; we disguise our paleness (either with fake-bake or spray on tan); we put on personalities in certain situations that aren’t ours; we seek surgeries to lift, plump, unstretch, stretch, fatten or flatten, lighten and brighten; and for what purpose?
So others will see the person they wish to see?  What happens when they discover the real person we are?  It’s a lot less stressful to be real than to keep the mask on and maintained.
So what does the title have to do with this?  It got you to read this, didn’t it? SURPRISE!

Sir Henry Morgan

When I was younger, and, apparently, according to some who shall remain somewhat nameless, I was around shortly before dirt was invented, I often dreamt of what I had idealized the life of adventure would entail. I imagined the rolling waves, the cannons blazing, the winds filling the sails, the treasure, the yo-h0-h0ing, and could lose many an hour in such daydreams.

As I got older, and no comments from the peanut galleries, I learned that a life of adventure is still possible.  We experience it every day.  No, we don’t dash about slashing and burning, or at least I hope not, but we do have adventures and find treasures.  Don’t believe me? Look at your friends.  Not those idiots, you’re REAL friends.  They are treasures, and I can guarantee it was quite an adventure getting to know them.

Perhaps you met them at the office, perhaps you met them at the opera (ahem), perhaps you met them while fleeing the authorities after you escaped from a hidden gulag deep in the Siberian wilderness, or you might have met them hitchhiking from some other universe.  The point is, you have lots of gems called “friends.”  Cling to them! Surrender them not without a fight!

As for adventures…..finding a parking spot can be quite the adventure at times unless you happen to drive a tank.  Every moment you draw breath carries with it the potential to live fully or hide from life.  Raise your sails, hoist your flag, and let’s weigh anchor for adventure and treasure! (parrot and pegleg optional).

This was from a while back. I use it as a reminder.

I'm Not Lost, Just Weird

We zing around the Sun on this spinning blue marble and seldom pay attention to what’s around us.  I mean truly pay attention.  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had his famous character, Sherlock Holmes, rebuke Dr. Watson by saying, “You see, but you do not observe.”

We do this most of our time on this rock.  We toddle along locked in our own lives, focused only on what pertains to us, hearing only “blah, blah, blah…food…blah, blah, blah…money…blah, blah, blah…health…blah, blah, blah…news.”

What if we woke up one morning and actually listened to the music that’s all around us? What if we actually looked at the amazing world around us?  What if we truly cared?  How would that change your life?

Would you laugh more? Would you dance? Would you sing? Would you LIVE? Truly Live?

Here’s my point, we only get one life ride here, make…

Storms Are Inevitable

You hear the gentle rumble.

You see the wind begins to blow a bit harder.

Then the rains begin.

The sun hides behind the darkening clouds.

The wind sends the branches flailing and whipping about.

The thunder booms

The lightning slashes the sky like a crooked rapier, piercing the darkness without effort.

Soon the winds are howling like ravenous wolves

Tearing at whatever they can find

Shredding all in their path.

Isn’t this how we feel when our own storms come tromping into our lives?  Have you ever asked “Why?”?   Have you ever felt more like you were a leaf in a storm….helpless and floundering at the whim of the winds?

Here’s the thing about storms, and I speak from a lifetime of experience with doing things wrong.  Storms come.  That’s inevitable and may not sound like fun, because they’re not fun, but they come anyway like it or not.  Storms don’t care if you’re ready for them or not, they’re coming anyway.  But here’s the good thing about storms…..they always pass.  Might take some time, and, true, there might be some damage, but they WILL pass.

Sometimes we feel like it’s easier just to be at the mercy of the winds and let them whip us about as they will.  But hang on and you’ll find out a lot about yourself.  By hanging on, you will be pulled and stretched and maybe even battered a bit, but you’ll come out stronger!

I don’t know how true it is, but it’s still a good story.

The story goes that Admiral Horatio Nelson, in preparing to engage Napoleon’s fleet, ordered that all of his ships of the line were to be built exclusively with the trees from the EDGE of the forests. This was because they had survived the storms and were much stronger than the trees in the middle of the forest.

It’s not easy being a Rider on the Storm.  But nothing worthwhile IS easy.

I have to admit that JOTS and DOC don’t like getting awards and told me not to, but since when do rules apply when rule breakers are involved?  So my dear JOTS, this one’s for you and your birthday! And this one’s for you, DOC, as a reward for all your hard work!

This is for the blogger who doesn’t want awards and the rules are simple…..

Say Thank You

Enjoy the rest of your day.

See? Pretty painless. But I just couldn’t resist.

It’s The Simple Things…

It's the simple things
That bring the biggest smiles

I wouldn’t consider myself simple, well, perhaps I can be at times, but that’s an entirely different meaning of “simple.” But my mind was scampering through the forest of thought this morning and I began to remember things that make me smile.

 Things like:

  • when the dog greets me (happily) at the door when I come home.  And NO, I do not keep bacon in my pockets or the proverbial porkchop tied around my neck.
  • When the coffee reaches that point where it’s just hot enough yet cool enough to drink.
  • That moment when you get to be the first one on cue at the checkout line.
  • When you finally find that pair of pants that fit just right and you find out they’re on sale.
  • When you stop for fuel right AFTER the price dropped.
  • When you get an actual letter in your mailbox (that’s from someone you want to hear from).
  • That moment when you’re just about to drift off to sleep and you hear the rain begin.
  • The feel of the sand washing out from under your feet at the beach.
  • Finding a few bucks in your pocket that you had forgotten about.
  • When the loud talkers that had been standing outside your office finally decide to take their conversation to the breakroom.
  • Singing to a song on the radio and looking over to see the person in the car next to you singing the same song (just as badly) and you end up laughing together about it at the next light.
  • Getting to draw faces on a friend’s toes.

The simple things really are some of the most wonderful times in our lives.  They happen every day and we usually take them for granted.  Eyes open!  Watch for them!  For they can be small and elusive or they may step up and slap you in the head.

Laugh often, smile oftener and live!

Ever Screwed Up?

“When you make a mistake, there are only three things you should ever do about it:

admit it, learn from it, and don’t repeat it.”

One of THOSE Days

I spent twelve years in therapy, going once a week (sometimes twice, depending on the voices) at $100 per hour, which is really only 50 minutes.  I poured out my heart and soul, spilling forth all that was crammed within my mind and had been rattling around, pushing for other things to move over and make room.  My mind was filled to the point that it resembled more of a Three Stooges skit than a thought process.

Faithfully and patiently, the doctor listened to me rant and ramble about anything and everything.  Every so often I’d see him make a note or I’d hear the pencil against the page of his notepad and wondered if I was getting better or, at the very least, making progress.

FINALLY, after twelve years I just had to know and at the end of our session I asked, “Doc…….am I doing any better?  The voices seem to have calmed a bit and my mind sounds much less like the monkey island at the zoo during mating season.  Am I going to be okay?”

The Doc looked thoughtfully at his notes, stroked his beard, looked me right in the eyes and said, “Ich spreche kein Englisch”
